فلما فرغ أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام من أمر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله جلس في المسجد حزينا كئيبا من فراق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله ، فاجتمع إليه بنو هاشم ومعه زبير بن العوام واجتمعت بنو أمية إلى عثمان بن عفان ، وبنو زهرة إلى عبد الرحمن بن عوف فكانوا في المسجد مجتمعين إذ أقبل أبو بكر وعمر وأبو عبيدة بن الجراح ، فقالوا مالنا نريكم حلقا شتى ، قوموا فبايعوا أبا بكر فقد بايعه الأنصار والناس فقام عثمان وعبد الرحمن بن عوف ومن معهما فبايعوا ، وانصرف علي عليه السلام وبنو هاشم إلى منزل علي ( عليه السلام ) ومعهم الزبير ، قال : فذهب إليهم عمر في جماعة ممن بايع ، فيهم أسيد بن حضير وسلمة بن سلامة فألفوهم مجتمعين فقالوا لهم : بايعوا أبا بكر فقد بايعه الناس ، فوثب الزبير إلى سيفه فقال : عمر : عليكم بالكلب العقور فاكفونا شره ، فبادر سلمة بن سلامة فانتزع السيف من يده ، فأخذه عمر ، فضرب به الأرض فكسره ، وأحدقوا بمن كان هناك من بني هاشم ومضوا بجماعتهم إلى أبي بكر فلما حضروا ، قالوا : بايعوا أبا بكر فقد بايعه الناس ، وأيم الله لئن أبيتم ذلك لنحاكمنكم بالسيف ، فلما رأى ذلك بنو هاشم ، أقبل رجل رجل فجعل يبايع الخ 3 .
When the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, had finished with the affair of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, he sat in the mosque, grieving and downcast at the parting from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. The Banu Hashim gathered to him, and with him was al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwam; and the Banu Umayya gathered to 'Uthman b. 'Affan, and the Banu Zuhra to 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf. They were gathered in the mosque when Abu Bakr and 'Umar and Abu 'Ubayda b. al-Jarrah came forward and said: What ails us, that we see you in separate circles? Rise and pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr, for the Ansar and the people have pledged to him. So 'Uthman rose, and 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf and those with them, and they pledged. And 'Ali, peace be upon him, and the Banu Hashim went away to the dwelling of 'Ali, peace be upon him, and with them al-Zubayr. He said: 'Umar went to them with a company of those who had pledged, among them Usayd b. Hudayr and Salama b. Salama, and found them gathered, and said to them: Pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr, for the people have pledged to him. Al-Zubayr sprang to his sword, and 'Umar said: Take the biting dog, and spare us his harm. Salama b. Salama hastened forward and snatched the sword from his hand, and 'Umar took it and struck the ground with it and broke it. And they surrounded those of the Banu Hashim who were there, and went with their company to Abu Bakr. When they were present, they said: Pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr, for the people have pledged to him; and by God, if you refuse that, we shall judge between you and us with the sword. When the Banu Hashim saw that, man after man came forward and began to pledge — and so on. [3]
وروى صاحب الاحتجاج عن عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن أنه قال : ثم إن عمر احتزم بإزاره وجعل يطوف بالمدينة وينادي : ألا إن أبا بكر قد بويع له فهلموا إلى البيعة ، فينثال 4 الناس فيبايعون ، فعرف أن جماعة في بيوت مستترون فكان يقصدهم في جمع فيكبسهم ويحضرهم في المسجد فيبايعون ، حتى إذا مضت إيام أقبل في جمع كثير إلى منزل علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام فطالبه بالخروج فأبي فدعا عمر بحطب ونار .
And the author of al-Ihtijaj related from 'Abd Allah b. 'Abd al-Rahman that he said: Then 'Umar girded himself with his wrapper and set about going round Medina calling out: Abu Bakr has been given the pledge, so come to the pledge. And the people poured out [4] and pledged. Then he learned that a company were hidden in their houses, so he would make for them with a body of men and fall upon them and bring them to the mosque, and they would pledge — until, when some days had passed, he came with a great company to the dwelling of 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon him, and demanded that he come out; and he refused. So 'Umar called for firewood and fire,
وقال : والذي نفس عمر بيده ليخرجن أو لأحرقنه على ما فيه .
and said: By Him in whose hand is 'Umar's soul, he shall come out, or I shall burn it down upon whoever is in it.
فقيل له : إن فيه فاطمة بنت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وولد رسول الله
It was said to him: In it is Fatima the daughter of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and the children of the Messenger of God,
