Section [on the pledge of the people to Abu Bakr that 'Umar took]. Ibn Abi al-Hadid and Sulaym b. Qays related from al-Bara' b. 'Azib, who said: I never ceased to love the Banu Hashim. When the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, was taken, there seized me what seizes a bereaved and distracted woman, together with what was in my soul of grief at the death of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. I kept going back and forth to the Banu Hashim, who were with the Prophet in the chamber, and I would look out for the faces of Quraysh. And while I was thus, I missed Abu Bakr and 'Umar; and behold, one was saying: The people are in the portico of Banu Sa'ida. And behold, another was saying: Abu Bakr has already been given the pledge. I had not long to wait when there was Abu Bakr coming, and with him 'Umar and Abu 'Ubayda and a company of the men of the portico, girded with the wrappers of San'a', passing no one without setting upon him and bringing him forward, and stretching out his hand and wiping it upon the hand of Abu Bakr in pledge — whether he wished it or refused. And I did not know my own mind, and I went out running until I came to the Banu Hashim [1], and the door was shut upon them. So I beat upon the door violently and said: The people have pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr b. Abi Quhafa. Al-'Abbas said: May your hands be in the dust to the end of time. [2]
