that, and pressed together, so that they began to tread upon Sa'd from the severity of the crush, while he was among them on his bed, ill. He said: You have killed me. 'Umar said: Kill Sa'd; may God kill him. Qays b. Sa'd sprang up and took 'Umar by the beard and said: By God, O son of Suhak — coward in war, fugitive, a lion in the assembly and in safety — had you disturbed a single hair of his, you would not have gone back with a tooth showing in your mouth. [4]

Abu Bakr said: Gently, 'Umar, for gentleness is more effective and better. Sa'd said: O son of Suhak — and 'Umar's grandmother was an Abyssinian — by God, had I strength to rise, you two would have heard from me in its lanes a roaring that would have driven you and your companions from it; and I would have joined you to a people among whom you were tails, abased, followers and not followed. You have made bold, O family of Khazraj — carry me from the place of sedition.

So they carried him and brought him into his dwelling. And after that, Abu Bakr sent to him: The people have pledged allegiance, so pledge. He said: By God, not until I shoot at you every arrow in my quiver, and dye the head of my spear, and strike you with my sword as long as my hand can hold it, and fight you with whoever follows me of my household and my clan. By God, were the jinn and mankind to gather against me, I would not pledge allegiance to you two, O disobedient usurpers, until I come before my Lord and know what my reckoning is. When his words reached them, 'Umar said: There is no help for it but his allegiance.

Bashir b. Sa'd said: He has refused and persisted, and he will not pledge allegiance unless he is killed; and he will not be killed until the Khazraj and the Aws are killed with him. So leave him; leaving him will do no harm. So they accepted his word and left Sa'd. And Sa'd would not pray with their prayer, nor judge by their judgement; and had he found helpers he would have set upon them and fought them. He remained thus throughout the rule of Abu Bakr until Abu Bakr perished; then 'Umar ruled, and he was the same. Sa'd feared the malice of 'Umar and went out to Syria, and died at Hawran [5] during the rule of 'Umar, having pledged allegiance to no one. The cause of his death was that he was shot with an arrow by night and killed; and it was claimed that the jinn had shot him. [6]

And from Ibn 'Abd al-Barr and Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani, that they both said: Sa'd pledged allegiance to neither
