was. Who disputes with us the authority of Muhammad, may God bless him and his Family, when we are his friends and his clan?
Al-Hubab b. al-Mundhir said: O assembly of Ansar, hold your hands, and do not listen to the words of this man and his companions, lest they take away your share of this affair. If they refuse you, then drive them out of these lands; for you are more deserving of this affair than they, since it was by your swords that the people submitted to this religion. I am the rubbing-post and the propped palm; I am the father of the lion cub in the lair of the lion. By God, if you wish, we shall return it a young beast again. 'Umar said: Then may God kill you. He said: Rather may He kill you. (2)
Abu 'Ubayda said: O assembly of Ansar, you were the first to help; so do not be the first to alter or to change.
Then Bashir b. Sa'd, the father of al-Nu'man b. Bashir, rose and said: O assembly of Ansar, Muhammad, may God bless him and his Family, was of Quraysh, and his people are more entitled to him. By God, God shall not see me disputing this affair with them.
Abu Bakr said: Here are 'Umar and Abu 'Ubayda; pledge allegiance to whichever of them you will. And the two said: By God, we shall not take charge of this affair over you, when you are the most excellent of the Emigrants and the deputy of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, in the prayer — and it is the most excellent part of the religion!
Stretch out your hand. And when he stretched out his hand for them to pledge to him, Bashir b. Sa'd got in before them and pledged to him. Al-Hubab b. al-Mundhir called out to him: O Bashir, may you be disowned! You begrudged your cousin the command. [3]
Usayd b. Hudayr, the chief of the Aws, said to his companions: By God, if you do not pledge allegiance, the Khazraj will have the precedence over you for ever. So they rose and pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr; and what Sa'd b. 'Ubada and the Khazraj had agreed upon was broken up. The people came pledging allegiance to Abu Bakr from every side, and they thronged upon — (2) Al-jidhl: a post set up for mangy camels to rub against and so find relief; and al-muhakkak: that which has been much rubbed against until it has become smooth.
And al-'idhq, with fatha: the palm tree; and al-murajjab: the one propped with a rajaba, which is a piece of wood with two forks, done when it has grown tall and its load is heavy.
The meaning is: I am a man of judgement whose light is much sought in such an event as this; and in the abundance of my experience and my knowledge of how affairs come out in such matters and the like of them, I am as a palm tree heavy with fruit.
The sum of the intent of these words is: I am the one whose opinion is to be taken. (Bihar.)
