Abu Bakr nor 'Umar, and they were not able to compel him as they compelled others, because of the multitude of his people from the Khazraj; so they guarded against their sedition. And when the government of the people of Islam came to 'Umar, Sa'd passed one day through the market of Medina, and 'Umar's eye fell upon him and he said to him: Enter into our allegiance, O Sa'd, or leave this town.
Sa'd said: It is forbidden to me to be in a town of which you are the commander. Then he went out from Medina to Syria; and he had a large clan in the districts of Damascus, and he would live each week with a group of them. In those days he was going one day from one village to another, and they shot him from behind an orchard that lay on his road with an arrow, and he was killed. End.
And from al-Baladhuri: that 'Umar b. al-Khattab indicated to Khalid b. al-Walid and Muhammad b. Maslama al-Ansari that he should be killed; and each of them shot him with an arrow and he was killed. Then they cast into people's minds the notion that the jinn had killed him, and they put this verse upon their tongues: “We have slain the lord of the Khazraj, Sa'd b. 'Ubada; we shot him with two arrows and did not miss his heart.” And Ibn Abi al-Hadid related from Abu Bakr Ahmad b. 'Abd al-'Aziz, with his chain, from al-Qasim b. Muhammad, who said: When the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, died, the Ansar gathered to Sa'd b. 'Ubada, and Abu Bakr, 'Umar and Abu 'Ubayda came to them. Al-Hubab b. al-Mundhir said: From us an emir and from you an emir. By God, I do not begrudge you this affair, O company; but we fear that after you it will be held by those whose sons and fathers and brothers we killed. — the report.
Ibn Abi al-Hadid said: I read this report to Abu Ja'far Yahya b. Ja'far al-'Alawi, and he said: The insight of al-Hubab b. al-Mundhir proved true, for what he feared came to pass on the Day of al-Harra, and the vengeance of the polytremendous of the Day of Badr was taken from the Ansar.
Then he said to me, may God have mercy on him: And it was of this that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, also feared for his progeny and his family. For he, may God bless him and his Family, had wounded the people, and knew that if he died and left his daughter and her children as common folk and subjects under the hands of the rulers, they would be exposed to great danger. So he never ceased establishing for the son of
