nor punishment, and that I had never heard mention of the Fire. And 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: Would that the beasts had torn my flesh; would that my mother had never borne me, and that I had never heard mention of the Fire.
Then he put his hand upon his head and began to weep, saying: Alas for the length of the journey, and alas for the scantness of the provision, in the journey of the Resurrection! They go into the Fire and are snatched away — sick, whose ailing ones are not visited; wounded, whose wounded are not treated; captives whose captivity in the Fire is not loosed. They eat of it and they drink of it, and between its layers they are turned about; and after the wearing of cotton they are clothed in garments cut from the Fire; and after the embracing of spouses they are bound together with devils.
Kashf al-Ghumma, from the Musnad of Ahmad b. Hanbal, from Thawban the freedman of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, who said: When the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, travelled, the last of his family he took leave of was Fatima, peace be upon her, and the first he came in to when he returned was Fatima, peace be upon her. He said: He returned from a raid and came to her, and behold, there was a curtain upon her door, and he saw upon al-Hasan and al-Husayn, peace be upon them, two bracelets of silver [2]. So he turned back and did not enter upon her. When she saw that she supposed that he had not entered because of what he had seen; so she tore down the curtain and took the two bracelets off the boys and cut them, and the boys wept, and she divided it between them. They went off to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, weeping, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, took it from them and said: O Thawban, take this to the family of so-and-so, a household in Medina, and buy for Fatima a necklace of sinew and two bracelets of ivory; for these are the people of my house, and I do not love that they should consume their good things in the life of this world.
The venerable shaykh Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. Jarir al-Tabari related in al-Dala'il, with his chain to Ibn Mas'ud, that a man came to Fatima, peace be upon her, and said: O daughter of the Messenger of God, did the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, leave with you anything you might favour me with? She, peace be upon her, said: O
