Section [on her asceticism, peace be upon her]. Al-Sayyid b. Tawus, from the book Zuhd al-Nabi, may God bless him and his Family, of Abu Ja'far Ahmad al-Qummi: that when this verse was revealed to the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family — “and truly Hell is the promised place for them all; it has seven gates, and to each gate belongs an allotted portion of them” — the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, wept bitterly, and his companions wept at his weeping, and they did not know what Gabriel had brought down to him, and none of his companions was able to speak to him. Now the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, when he saw Fatima, peace be upon her, would rejoice at her. So one of his companions went off to the door of her house and found before her barley which she was grinding, and she was saying: “and what is with God is better and more lasting.” He greeted her and told her the news of the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, and of his weeping. So she rose and wrapped herself in a worn mantle of hers that had been patched in twelve places with palm fibre. When she came out, Salman the Persian looked at the mantle and wept and said: Alas for my sorrow! The daughters of Caesar and Chosroes are in fine silk and brocade, and the daughter of Muhammad, may God bless him and his Family, wears a worn woollen mantle patched in twelve places!

When Fatima, peace be upon her, came in to the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, she said: O Messenger of God, Salman marvelled at my dress. By Him who sent you with the truth, for five years now 'Ali and I have had nothing but a single sheepskin: by day we set fodder on it for our camel, and when night comes we spread it beneath us. And our pillow is of hide stuffed with palm fibre. The Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, said: O Salman, my daughter is among the foremost of the racers.

Then she said: Father, may I be your ransom, what has made you weep?

So he told her what Gabriel had brought down of the two verses mentioned above. He said: And Fatima, peace be upon her, fell upon her face, saying: Woe, and again woe, to whoever enters the Fire! Salman heard it and said: Would that I were a ram belonging to my family, that they might eat my flesh and tear my skin, and that I had never heard mention of the Fire. And Abu Dharr said: Would that my mother had been barren and had never borne me, and that I had never heard mention of the Fire. And Miqdad said: Would that I were a bird in the wastelands, and that there were no reckoning upon me
