And al-Saduq, may God have mercy on him, related from the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, that he said to a man of Banu Sa'd: Shall I not tell you of myself and of Fatima? She was with me, and she was among the dearest of his family to him. She drew water with the waterskin until it left a mark upon her breast; she ground with the hand-mill until her hands were calloused; she swept the house until her clothes were dusty; and she kindled the fire beneath the pot until her clothes were blackened. From that she suffered severe harm.

I said to her: Were you to go to your father and ask him for a servant, to spare you the hardship of the work you are in — so she went to the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, and found people in conversation with him; and she was ashamed, and turned back.

He said: The Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, knew that she had come for a need. He said: And the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, came to us in the morning while we were in our wrap.

He said: Peace be upon you. And we kept silent, being ashamed of our situation. Then he said: Peace be upon you. And we kept silent. Then he said: Peace be upon you. And we feared that if we did not answer him he would turn away — for he used to do that: he would greet three times, and if he were given leave he entered, and otherwise he turned away. So I said: And upon you be peace, O Messenger of God; enter. And he did no more than sit at our heads, and said: O Fatima, what was your need yesterday with Muhammad, may God bless him and his Family?

He, peace be upon him, said: I feared that if we did not answer him he would rise. He said: So I put out my head and said: By God, I shall tell you, O Messenger of God. She drew water with the waterskin until it left a mark upon her breast; she pulled at the hand-mill until her hands were calloused; she swept the house until her clothes were dusty; and she kindled the fire beneath the pot until her clothes were blackened. And I said to her: Were you to go to your father and ask him for a servant, to spare you the hardship of the work you are in.

He, may God bless him and his Family, said: Shall I not teach you both something better for you than a servant?

When you take to your bed, glorify God thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times, and magnify Him thirty-four times. He said: And she, peace be upon her, put out her head and said: I am content with God and with His Messenger — three times over. [6]
