and he, may God bless him and his Family, ruled for Fatima, peace be upon her, the service of what lay within the door, and ruled for 'Ali, peace be upon him, what lay beyond it. He said: Fatima, God's blessings be upon her, said: None knows the joy that entered me but God, at the Messenger of God's sparing me the burden of dealing with the necks of men. [14]

From al-Khara'ij, it is related that Salman, may God be pleased with him, said: Fatima, peace be upon her, was seated with a hand-mill before her, grinding barley with it, and upon the handle of the mill was flowing blood; and al-Husayn, peace be upon him, was in a corner of the house writhing from hunger. I said: O daughter of the Messenger of God, your hands are worn raw — and here is Fidda. She, peace be upon her, said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, charged me that the service should be hers for a day; and yesterday was the day of her service. Salman said: I said: I am a freedman of your manumission — shall I grind the barley, or quiet al-Husayn, peace be upon him, for you?

She said: I am the gentler at quieting him; you grind the barley. So I ground some of the barley, and then the call to prayer was given; so I went and prayed with the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. When I had finished I told 'Ali, peace be upon him, what I had seen, and he wept and went out; then he returned and smiled, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, asked him about that.

He said: I came in upon Fatima, and she was lying upon her back with al-Husayn asleep upon her breast, and before her a mill turning with no hand upon it. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, smiled and said: O 'Ali, do you not know that God has angels who travel about the earth serving Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad until the Hour arises? [15]

And it is related that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, came in upon 'Ali, peace be upon him, and found him and Fatima, peace be upon her, grinding at the hand-mill. The Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, said: Which of you two is the more weary?

'Ali, peace be upon him, said: Fatima, O Messenger of God. So he said to her: Rise, my little daughter. And she rose,
