the lord of Yemen. His brother al-Malik al-Nasir had sent to him, summoning him to settle on the coast that had been wrested from the hands of the Franks; but Ibn 'Unayn made the coast seem of little worth to him and made Yemen desirable to him, and incited him against the Sharifs who had done to him what they did. The opening of the ode: — The descriptions of your eloquent bounty have worn out the tongue, and in generosity you have passed the bound of the fair and the excellent. — Say not, “the coast of the Franks, I shall take it”; for it is worth nothing, set beside Aden. — And if you desire holy war, then let your sword part from a people who have squandered God's ordinances and the sunnas. — Purify with your sword the House of God from defilement, and from the baseness and the foulness of certain folk within it. — And say not, “they are the children of Fatima”; had they met the House of Harb, they would have made war on al-Hasan. — He said: When he had spoken this ode, he saw in his sleep Fatima al-Zahra, peace be upon her, circling the House. He greeted her, and she did not answer him; so he humbled himself and abased himself, and asked what his sin was that had required the withholding of her greeting. And al-Zahra, peace be upon her, recited to him:

Far be it from the sons of Fatima, all of them, that baseness should be shown of them, or foulness. — It is only the days, in their excusing and their evil doing, that have done ill by us. — Where is the wrong of one single child of mine, that you have made all reviling ours, deliberately?
