and My majesty, I shall surely make the reward of your glorification and your sanctification, until the Day of Resurrection, for those who love this woman and her father and her husband and her sons. (8)
Among her names also are al-Hasan (the chaste), al-Hurra (the free), al-Sayyida (the mistress), al-'Adhra' (the virgin), al-Hawra' (the houri), Maryam al-Kubra (the greater Mary), and al-Batul. [9]
It is related concerning the meaning of al-Batul that she is the one who never saw blood — that is, she did not menstruate — and that it was by this that Maryam, the mother of 'Isa, peace be upon them, was named. It has been said that al-batl is severance, and that Fatima was named al-Batul for her being set apart from the women of her time in excellence, in religion and in lineage; and it has been said, for her being cut off from the world towards God Most High; and it has been said, because she was set apart as having no peer. [10]
Ibn Shahrashub said in the Manaqib: It is established in the reports that Fatima has twenty names, each name indicating a virtue; Ibn Babawayh mentioned them in the book of the birth of Fatima, peace be upon her. [11]
[Section on her kunyas.] As for her kunyas, God's blessings be upon her: Umm al-Hasan, Umm al-Husayn, Umm al-Muhassin, Umm al-A'imma, Umm Abiha, and Umm al-Mu'minin — this last kunya occurring in her ziyara. And in the Manaqib it is said that she is called in heaven al-Nuriyya, al-Samawiyya, al-Haniya.
I say: al-Haniya is she who is tender towards her husband and her children.
As for her tenderness towards her husband, it is enough in that to recall what came upon her of beating and humiliation, the breaking of the rib, and the mark of the whip upon her arm like an armlet — the details of which will come, God Most High willing. (1) Irshad, p. 403; Bihar, vol. 43, p. 17.
