Section [on the number of her names and the reason for her naming]. From Yunus b. Zabyan, who said: Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, said: Fatima has nine names with God, mighty and exalted — Fatima, al-Siddiqa, al-Mubaraka, al-Tahira, al-Zakiyya, al-Radiyya, al-Mardiyya, al-Muhaddatha and al-Zahra. Then he said: Do you know what the interpretation of Fatima is?
I said: Tell me, my master. He said: She was weaned away from evil. Then he said: Had the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, not married her, she would have had no match until the Day of Resurrection upon the face of the earth — Adam and those after him. [1]
And in a number of the traditions: she was named Fatima because she and her partisans were weaned away from the Fire; and that she was weaned by knowledge; and that she was weaned from menstruation; and that creation was weaned from the knowledge of her; and that God weaned her and her progeny from the Fire — whoever of them meets God professing His oneness and faith in His Messenger; and that God weaned from the Fire whoever loves her. [2]
And it is related that the name Fatima is drawn from the name of God, al-Fatir. She was named al-Tahira for her purity from every defilement and her purity from every obscenity; and she never saw a day of blood, nor lochia. [3]
