and his Family, would rise with his hand upon al-Hasan's back and the other upon his knee, until he completed the prayer. They said: Yes, we have known that. Then he said: You both know, and the people of Medina know, that al-Hasan used to run to the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, and mount upon his neck, and al-Hasan would let his legs hang down upon the breast of the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, until the gleam of his two anklets was seen from the far end of the mosque, while the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, was preaching; and he would not cease to be upon his neck until the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, finished his sermon, with al-Hasan upon his neck. So when the child saw another upon the pulpit of his father, that weighed heavily upon him. By God, I did not command him to that, nor did he do it by my command.
And as for Fatima, she is the woman for whom I asked leave for you to enter; and you both saw what came of her speech to you. By God, she charged me that you should not attend her funeral nor the prayer over her; and I was not one to oppose her command and her charge to me concerning you. So 'Umar said: Leave aside this muttering of yours. I shall go to the graves and dig her up, that I may pray over her.
So 'Ali, peace be upon him, said to him: By God, if you went aiming at anything of that — and you know that you would not reach it until that in which your two eyes are had been struck away from you — for I would deal with you with nothing but the sword before you reached anything of that. So there fell between 'Ali and 'Umar words, until they wrangled and reviled one another; and the Emigrants and the Ansar gathered and said: By God, we are not content with this, that it should be said concerning the cousin of the Messenger of God and his brother and his legatee. And discord was near to falling out; so the two of them parted. [25]
From 'Ali b. 'Isa al-Irbili, who said: One of the companions recited to me, of the qadi Abu Bakr Qurai'a: — O you who ask persistently — about every feeble knotty question: — do not uncover what is covered, — for perhaps you would uncover a carcass. — And many a thing concealed in this way — is like the drum beneath the coverlet. — The answer is indeed ready, — but I hide it out of fear.
