him to the ground and said to him: O son of the black woman, as for my right, I have left it for fear that the people should turn back from their religion. But as for the grave of Fatima, peace be upon her — by Him in whose hand is the soul of 'Ali, if you and your companions aim at anything of that, I shall water the earth with your blood. So if you wish, then come forward, O 'Umar. Then Abu Bakr met him and said: O Abu al-Hasan, by the right of the Messenger of God and by the right of Him who is above the Throne, let him go; for we shall do nothing that you dislike. He said: So he let him go, and the people dispersed and did not return to that. [24]

And in al-Safi, related from 'Ilal al-Shara'i', after mentioning that 'Ali, peace be upon him, brought out the bier and the fire was kindled in palm-branches, and he walked with the bier with the fire until he prayed over her and buried her by night: He said: And when Abu Bakr and 'Umar rose in the morning, they returned to visit Fatima, peace be upon her; and they met a man of Quraysh and said to him: Where have you come from?

He said: I have consoled 'Ali over Fatima. They said: And has she died?

He said: Yes, and she was buried in the middle of the night. So the two of them were in a severe anguish. Then they came to 'Ali, peace be upon him, and met him and said to him: By God, you have left nothing of our troubling and our vexation; and this is only from something in your breast against us. Is this anything but as you washed the Messenger of God apart from us and did not bring us in with you; and as you taught your son to shout at Abu Bakr: Come down from the pulpit of my father?

So 'Ali, peace be upon him, said to them: Will you believe me if I swear to you?

They said: Yes. So he swore; and 'Ali, peace be upon him, brought them into the mosque and said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, charged me and had laid it upon me that no one should look upon his nakedness but his cousin. So I washed him while the angels turned him, and al-Fadl b. al-'Abbas handed me the water, and his eyes were bound with a cloth. And I wished to pull off the shirt, and a caller cried out at me from the house — I heard the voice and did not see the form: Do not pull off the shirt of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. And I heard the voice repeating it to me. So I put my hand in from within the shirt and washed him. Then the shroud was brought to me and I shrouded him; then I pulled off the shirt after I had shrouded him.

And as for al-Hasan my son, you both know, and the people of Medina know, that he used to step over the rows until he came to the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, while he was prostrating, and would mount upon his back; and the Prophet, may God bless him
