al-Muttalib came to her visiting. And it was said to him: She is grave, and no one enters upon her. So he went away to his house and sent to 'Ali, peace be upon him, and said to his messenger: Say to him: O son of my brother, your uncle gives you greeting and says to you: By God, there has come upon me suddenly of grief, at the sickness of the beloved of the Messenger of God and the coolness of his eyes and of my eyes, Fatima, peace be upon her, what has broken me. And I think she is the first of us to join the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family; and God chooses for her and bestows upon her and brings her near to Him. So if there be of her affair what there is no escape from, then let me gather for you — I am your ransom — the Emigrants and the Ansar, that they may attain the reward in attending her and praying over her; and in that is a beauty for the religion.

So 'Ali, peace be upon him, said to his messenger — the narrator said, and he is 'Ammar: I was present with him: Convey to my uncle the greeting and say: May you never lack your compassion and your tenderness. I have understood your counsel, and your opinion has its merit. Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger of God, has never ceased to be wronged, barred from her right and pushed away from her inheritance. The charge of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, concerning her was not kept, nor was his right regarded concerning her, nor the right of God, mighty and exalted. And God suffices as judge and as avenger from the wrongdoers. And I ask you, O uncle, to permit me to leave aside what you have advised; for she charged me with the concealing of her affair — and so on. [5]

And the two parties related from Umm Salma, the wife of Abu Rafi', who said: Fatima, peace be upon her, suffered the sickness in which she was taken, and I was nursing her. And one day she rose calmer than she had been; and 'Ali, peace be upon him, went out for some need of his. And she said: Pour out for me water for a washing. So I poured, and she rose and washed with the best of washings. Then she put on her new garments, and then said: Spread out my bed for me in the middle of the house. Then she faced the qibla and lay down and said: I am to be taken, and I have washed; so let no one uncover me. Then she put her cheek upon her hand, and died, the blessings of God be upon her. [6]

[Her greeting, the peace of God be upon her, to Gabriel and the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, when they came down to her] And it is related that she died between the sunset and the evening prayers; and that when death came upon her she looked a piercing look, then
