— O Messenger of the God, O chosen of God, — and shelter of the orphans and the weak: — if you could see the pulpit which you used to mount, — darkness has covered it after the light. — O my God, hasten my death swiftly; — life has been made bitter, O my Master. The narrator said: Then she returned to her dwelling and took to weeping and wailing, her night and her day, her tears not ceasing and her sighing not quieting. So the elders of the people of Medina gathered and came to the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and said to him: O Abu al-Hasan, Fatima weeps night and day, and not one of us can enjoy sleep by night upon our beds, nor by day have we any rest at our occupations and the seeking of our livelihoods. And we ask you to request of her that she weep either by night or by day. And he said, peace be upon him: Gladly and with honour.

So the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, came until he entered upon Fatima, the blessings of God be upon her, and she was not recovering from weeping, and consolation availed her nothing. And when she saw him she quieted a little for him, and he said to her: O daughter of the Messenger of God, the elders of Medina ask me to request of you that you weep for your father either by night or by day. And she said: O Abu al-Hasan, how little is my stay among them, and how near my departure from their midst! By God, I shall not be silent by night nor by day until I join my father, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. So 'Ali, peace be upon him, said to her: Do, O daughter of the Messenger of God, what seems good to you. Then he, peace be upon him, built for her a house in al-Baqi', set apart from Medina, called “the House of Sorrows”. And she, peace be upon her, when she rose in the morning, would set al-Hasan and al-Husayn, peace be upon them, before her and go out to al-Baqi' weeping; and she would not cease to be among the graves, weeping. And when the night came, the Commander of the Faithful would come to her and drive her along before him to her dwelling. [3]
