the blessings of God be upon her. For there entered upon her of sorrow what none knows but God, mighty and exalted. And her sorrow was ever renewed and her weeping ever more severe; her moaning would not still and her yearning would not quiet. And every day that came, her weeping was more than the first day.
The narrator said: So she sat for seven days; and when it was the eighth day she went out to visit her father's grave, and came on lamenting, stumbling in her skirts, seeing nothing for her tears and for the flowing of her weeping, until she drew near the noble grave, and she fainted. So the women hastened to her and sprinkled water upon her until she revived. And when she revived from her swoon,
she said: My strength has been taken from me, and my endurance has betrayed me, and my enemy gloats over me, and grief is my killer. O my father, I am left distracted and alone, bewildered and solitary. My voice has been quenched and my back is broken, and my living is embittered and my time made foul. I find, O my father, after you, no companion for my desolation, nor any that turns back my tears. Then she called out: O my father: — My sorrow for you is a sorrow ever new, — and my heart, by God, is captive and unyielding. — Every day my griefs increase in it, — and my dejection for you does not pass away. — O my father, who is there for the widows and the destitute, — and who for the community until the Day of Judgement? O my father, we have come, after you, to be among the oppressed. O my father, the people have come to turn away from us. So what tear at your parting does not pour forth, and what sorrow after you is not unending, and what eyelid after you is anointed with sleep? I have been struck, O my father, with the mighty calamity; and the affliction was no small thing. So your pulpit after you is desolate, and your prayer-niche is empty of your intimate discourse, and your grave is glad at your presence in it. Alas for you — until I come to you! Then she gave a deep breath and a moan at which her soul was near to going out; and then she said: — My patience has grown little and my solace has left me — after my loss of the Seal of the Prophets. — O eye, O eye, pour out the tear in a flood; [2] — woe to you, be not miserly with an outpouring of blood.
