to him; so he kicked her with his foot, and she was pregnant with a son named al-Muhsin, and she miscarried al-Muhsin, peace be upon him, from her womb. Then he struck her a blow; and it is as though I look upon the earring in her ear when it was broken. [2] Then he took the document and tore it up. So she went away and remained seventy-five days ill from what 'Umar had struck her with, and then was taken.
And when death came to her, she called 'Ali, the blessings of God be upon him, and said: Either you undertake it, or I shall make my bequest to Ibn al-Zubayr. And 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: I shall undertake your bequest, O daughter of Muhammad. She said: I ask you by the right of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, that when I die those two should not attend me nor pray over me. He said: That is yours. And when she was taken, the blessings of God be upon her, he buried her by night in her house — and so on. [3]
I say: this report is not, with me, at the level of reliability of the rest of the reports mentioned; but since the 'allama al-Majlisi, may God have mercy on him, quoted it in the Bihar, I wished not to leave my book free of it, so I followed him and quoted it from him. And as for her words, the blessings of God be upon her, “or I shall make my bequest to Ibn al-Zubayr” — I think the word “Ibn” is from the copyists, and that the original was “I shall make my bequest to al-Zubayr”; this if the supposition is correct. But if the word “Ibn” is sound, then what is meant by it is 'Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr b. 'Abd al-Muttalib, one of the nine Hashimites who stood firm with the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, at Hunayn when all his companions fled, and there remained of them none but these, and Ayman b. Umm Ayman, who was the tenth of them; and Ayman was killed and these nine remained, until those who had been routed repented to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. And he, may God have mercy on him, was brave and bold, and was killed on the day of Ajnadayn in the caliphate of Abu Bakr.
But as for 'Abd Allah b. Zubayr b. al-'Awwam, he is certainly not the one meant; for he was a small child, not fit to be pointed to or turned to, let alone that Fatima, the blessings of God be upon her, should make her bequest to him. For his birth was in the first year of the Hijra, and it is said in the second year, in Shawwal, as Ibn al-Athir said — besides that he was turned away from the People of the House, peace be upon them. The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: Al-Zubayr never ceased to be a man of us, the People of the House, until his ill-omened son grew up. [4] And God is the Knowing.
