O company of the Emigrants and the Ansar, you know that I consulted you concerning the estate of Fadak after the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and you said: The prophets are not inherited from, and these are properties that must be joined to the property of the spoil and spent on the price of mounts and arms and the various means of striving and the needs of the frontiers. So we carried out your opinion; but he who lays claim to it has not carried it out. And here he is, flashing with menace and thundering with threat, swearing by the right of his Prophet that he will stain it with a deadly blood.

By God, I asked to be released from it and was not released, and sought to put it aside from myself and it was not put aside — all of that out of wariness of the son of Abi Talib's displeasure and in flight from his contention. And what have I to do with the son of Abi Talib? Has anyone ever contended with him and prevailed over him?

So 'Umar said: You refuse to speak except thus; and you are the son of one who was neither forward in wars nor generous in famines. Glory be to God — how craven [20] is your heart and how small your soul!!!

I have made clear for you great bucketfuls [21] to drink, and you refuse anything but to thirst with your own thirst. And I have made the necks of the Arabs kneel for you, and have made firm for you the rule over the people of counsel and of governance.

And but for that, the son of Abi Talib would have made your bones crumbled dust. So praise God for what He has bestowed upon you through me, and thank Him for that; for whoever mounts the pulpit of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, it is fitting that he should render thanks to God. And this 'Ali b. Abi Talib is the solid rock whose water does not gush forth save after its breaking; and the speckled serpent that answers to nothing but the charm; and the bitter tree which, were it smeared with honey, would yield nothing but bitterness. He killed the chiefs of Quraysh and destroyed them, and fastened shame upon the last of them and disgraced them. So be easy in yourself; let his thunderbolts not deceive you, nor his thunder and his lightning dismay you — for I shall shut his door before he shuts yours. So Abu Bakr said to him: I adjure you by God, O 'Umar, that you spare me your blunders and your bluster.

For by God, had [the son of Abi Talib] intended to kill me and to kill you, he would have killed us with his left hand and not his right. Nothing

Al-hala': cowardice.
Al-sijal: a great bucket.
