Uhud. Now by God, were I to say what God has already decreed concerning you, your ribs would fold into your bellies as the teeth of the turning millstone fold together. And if I speak, you say: Envy; and if I am silent, it is said: The son of Abi Talib has flinched from death. Far from it, far from it! Is this said to me now — and I am death and the dealer of death, [12] the plunger into destinies in the depths of a still night, [13] the bearer of the two heavy swords and the two long spears, and the shatterer of the banners in the tumult [14] of the overwhelming floods, and the reliever of distresses from the face of the best of creatures? Be at ease.

For by God, the son of Abi Talib is more familiar with death than the infant with the breasts of its mother. May the bereavers bereave you! Had I disclosed what God has sent down concerning you in His Book, you would have shaken as the well-ropes shake in the deep wells, and you would have gone out of your houses fleeing and wandering distracted upon your faces. But I make light of my sorrow, that I may meet my Lord with a hand cut off, empty of your pleasures, free of your quarrels. For your world is to me no more than a cloud that rose and towered, then thickened and levelled, then was torn and cleared away. Gently — for in a little while the dust of battle [15] shall clear for you, and you will find [16] the fruit of your deed bitter; nay, you will reap the planting of your own hands as a swift poison, [17] tearing, [18] a killing venom. And God suffices as judge, and His Messenger as adversary, and the Resurrection as the standing-place. And may God send none further off there than you, and bring none to ruin there but you; and peace be upon whoever follows guidance.

And when Abu Bakr read the letter he was seized with a severe terror at it, and said: Glory be to God! How bold he is against me, and how restrained against [19] others!
