is the strongest stronghold. So I said: Is what is said in the report of Khalid true? And he said: A group of the 'Alids mention that. And it has been related that a man came to Zufar b. al-Hudhayl, the companion of Abu Hanifa, and asked him what Abu Hanifa says about the permissibility of leaving the prayer by something other than the greeting — such as speech, or much movement, or a breaking of ablution. And he said: It is permitted; Abu Bakr said in his testimony of faith [what he said]. So the man said: And what is it that Abu Bakr said?

He said: Never mind. He said: So he repeated the question to him a second and a third time, and he said: Put him out, put him out! I had been saying that he is of the companions of Abu al-Khattab. I said: Then what is it that you yourself say?

He said: I hold that far-fetched, and that it is the Imamiyya who related it — and so on. [10]

[The letter of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, to Abu Bakr] Al-Ihtijaj: the letter of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, to Abu Bakr, when word of his speech reached him after the barring of al-Zahra', peace be upon her, from Fadak: You have split the surging waves of the trials with the breasts of the ships of deliverance, and cast down the crowns of the people of glory by gathering the people of treachery, and sought light from the Light of lights, and divided among yourselves the inheritances of the pure and righteous women, and loaded upon your backs [11] the burden of sins by your usurping of the gift of the Chosen Prophet. It is as though I see you going back and forth in blindness as the camel goes back and forth in the mill.

Now by God, were I permitted what you have no knowledge of, I would have reaped your heads from your bodies like the reaped grain, with cutting blades of iron; and I would have torn from the skulls of your champions that which would make your eye-corners fester and desolate your dwelling-places. For I, since you have known me, am the destroyer of armies and the annihilator of hosts and the ruiner of your green pastures and the quencher of your clamour and the slaughterer of those who wheel about — while you were secluded in your houses; and I was your companion but yesterday. By the life of my father and my mother, you will never love that the caliphate and the prophethood should both be among us, while you remember the rancours of Badr and the blood-vengeances of
