And the report of Abu Dharr, may God have mercy on him: that the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, took Khalid at that moment with his two fingers, the forefinger and the middle, and squeezed him a squeezing; and Khalid gave a hideous cry, and the people were terrified and each was concerned for himself. And Khalid fouled his clothes and began to strike with his legs and could not speak. And Abu Bakr said to 'Umar: This is your upside-down counsel; it is as though I had been looking at this — and I praise God for our safety. And whenever anyone drew near to free him from his hand, peace be upon him, he glanced at him, glance by glance, and he withdrew and turned back. So Abu Bakr sent 'Umar to al-'Abbas, and he came and interceded with him and adjured him, and said: By the right of the grave and of the one in it, and by the right of his two sons and their mother — that you let him go. So he did that; and al-'Abbas kissed him between his eyes. [8]

And in another report: then 'Ali, peace be upon him, rose to 'Umar and took him by the gathers of his garment and said: O son of Suhak the Abyssinian, were it not for a writ from God that has preceded and a covenant from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, you would know which of us is the weaker in helpers and the fewer in number. And those present came between him, peace be upon him, and the people, and freed 'Umar from the hand of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him. And at that al-'Abbas rose and came forward to Abu Bakr and said: Now by God, had you killed him, we would not have left a man of Taym walking upon the face of the earth. [9]

In the Bihar, Ibn Abi al-Hadid said: I asked the naqib Abu Ja'far Yahya b. Zayd, and said to him: I marvel at 'Ali, peace be upon him — how he remained that long period after the death of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and how he was not assassinated and struck down in the midst of his dwelling, with their livers burning against him. And he said: Had he not rubbed his nose in the dust and set his cheek in the low ground of the earth, he would have been killed. But he made himself obscure and occupied himself with worship and prayer and looking into the Qur'an, and departed from that former garb and that emblem, and forgot the sword, and became like the assassin who repents and becomes a wanderer in the earth or a monk in the mountains. And when he obeyed the people who took charge of the affair, and became more abased before them than a sandal, they let him be and were silent about him. And the Arabs would not have advanced against him except by an understanding with the holder of the affair and a secret inward assent from him. So when the holders of the affair had no motive and no call to kill him, the holding back from him came about; and but for that he would have been killed. Then the appointed term
