my heart and overcame me. So he said to me: By my right upon you, come near and eat. He said: So I came near and ate. Then he said to me: Your account. I said: I saw a constable [13] striking the head of a woman, driving her to the prison, and she calling out at the top of her voice: Help is sought of God and of His Messenger! — and no one came to her aid. He said, peace be upon him: And why did he do that to her?

He said: I heard the people saying that she stumbled and said: May God curse those who wronged you, O Fatima — so he committed against her what he committed. He said: So he broke off eating, peace be upon him, and did not cease weeping until his kerchief and his beard and his breast were wet with tears. Then he said: O Bashshar, rise with us to the mosque of al-Sahla, that we may call upon God and ask Him for the deliverance of this woman — and so on. [14]

So if the state of al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, was such at hearing of an event that befell a woman of the partisans of Fatima, peace be upon her, then how must his state have been, peace be upon him, when he himself related what befell his mother Fatima, peace be upon her?

And he says: Then he struck her; and it is as though I look upon the earring in her ear when it snapped — that is, was broken by the blow.

And from what we have mentioned there appears the severity of the calamity of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and the greatness of his patience. Indeed it may be said that some of his calamities are greater than what stands against them of the calamity of his son al-Husayn, peace be upon him — beside whose calamity all calamities are small.

For I have mentioned in my book translated as Nafas al-Mahmum, among the events of 'Ashura', from al-Tabari: that Shimr b. Dhi al-Jawshan charged until he pierced the tent of al-Husayn, peace be upon him, with his spear and called out: Bring me fire, that I may burn this house down upon its people. He said: So the women screamed and came out of the tent; and al-Husayn, peace be upon him, cried out at him: O son of Dhi al-Jawshan, you call for fire to burn my house down upon my family? May God burn you with fire.

Abu Mikhnaf said: Sulayman b. Abi Rashid related to me, from Humayd b. Muslim, who said: I said to Shimr b. Dhi al-Jawshan: Glory be to God! This is not fitting for you. Do you wish to gather upon yourself
