with the whip, and it pained her; and I heard from her a gasping and a weeping, and I was near to softening and turning away from the door.
Then I remembered the rancours of 'Ali, and his avidity in the blood of the chiefs of the Arabs, and the guile of Muhammad and his sorcery; so I kicked the door — and she had pressed her womb against the door to hold it as a shield. And I heard her, and she had cried out a cry which I thought had turned the top of Medina to its bottom; and she said: O my father, O Messenger of God, thus was your beloved and your daughter treated! Ah, Fidda, come here and take me — for by God, what is in my womb of a child has been killed. And I heard her going into labour, leaning against the wall. So I pushed the door and entered, and she turned to me with a face that dimmed my sight; and I struck a blow upon her cheeks from outside the head-covering, so that her earring broke off and scattered to the ground — the report in its full length.
And from Irshad al-Qulub, from her, peace be upon her, she said: So they gathered thick firewood at our door and brought the fire, to burn it and to burn us. And I stood at the doorpost and adjured them by God and by my father to hold back from us and to help us. So 'Umar took the whip from the hand of Qunfudh, the freedman of Abu Bakr, and struck my upper arm with it, and the whip coiled upon my arm until it became like an armlet. And he kicked the door with his foot and drove it back upon me while I was pregnant, and I fell upon my face, the fire blazing and scorching my face. And he struck me with his hand until my earring was scattered from my ear, and the labour came upon me, and I cast Muhsin, slain without any crime.
