فصل [ ما قاله عمر في كتاب عهد إلى معاوية ] في كتاب عهد عمر إلى معاوية : فأتيت داره مستشيرا لإخراجه منها ، فقالت الأمة فضة ، وقد قلت لها قولي لعلي يخرج إلى بيعة أبي بكر ، فقد اجتمع عليه المسلمون ، فقالت : إن أمير المؤمنين عليا مشغول : فقلت : خلي عنك هذا وقولي له : يخرج وإلا دخلنا عليه وأخرجناه كرها فخرجت فاطمة فوقفت من وراء الباب فقالت : أيها الضالون المكذبون ماذا تقولون ؟ وأي شئ تريدون ؟ فقلت يا فاطمة ، فقالت ما تشاء يا عمر ؟

Section [what 'Umar said in a letter of covenant to Mu'awiya]. In the letter of 'Umar's covenant to Mu'awiya: So I came to his house, intending to bring him out of it; and the bondmaid Fidda spoke — and I had said to her: Say to 'Ali that he should come out to the pledge of Abu Bakr, for the Muslims have gathered upon it. And she said: The Commander of the Faithful, 'Ali, is occupied. So I said: Leave this aside, and say to him: Let him come out, or we shall enter upon him and bring him out by force. So Fatima came out and stood behind the door and said: O you who are astray, you liars, what do you say? And what thing do you want? So I said: O Fatima. And she said: What do you wish, O 'Umar?

فقلت : ما بال ابن عمك قد أوردك للجواب وجلس من وراء الحجاب ؟

So I said: What is the matter with your cousin, that he has put you forward to answer and has sat behind the veil?

فقالت : لي : طغيانك يا شقي أخرجني وألزمك الحجة وكل ضال غوي ، فقلت : دعي عنك الأباطيل وأساطير النساء وقولي لعلي : يخرج ، فقالت : لا حب ولا كرامة ، أبحزب الشيطان تخوفني يا عمر ؟

She said to me: Your insolence, O wretched one, has brought me out, and has bound the proof upon you and upon every straying, misguided one. So I said: Leave aside your falsehoods and the fables of women, and say to 'Ali: Let him come out. She said: Neither willingly nor with any honour. Do you frighten me with the party of Satan, O 'Umar?

وكان حزب الشيطان ضعيفا ، فقلت : إن لم يخرج جئت بالحطب الجزل وأضرمتها نارا على أهل هذا البيت ، وأحرق من فيه ، أو يقاد علي إلى البيعة ، وأخذت سوط قنفذ فضربتها وقلت لخالد بن الوليد : أنت ورجالنا هلموا في جمع الحطب فقلت : إني مضرمها ، فقالت : يا عدو الله وعدو رسوله وعدو أمير المؤمنين فضربت فاطمة يديها من الباب تمنعني من فتحه ، فرمته ، فتصعب علي ، فضربت كفيها

— and the party of Satan was ever weak. So I said: If he does not come out, I shall bring thick firewood and set it ablaze as a fire upon the people of this house, and burn whoever is in it, or 'Ali shall be led to the pledge. And I took the whip of Qunfudh and struck her, and said to Khalid b. al-Walid: You and our men, come, gather the firewood. And I said: I am setting it alight. And she said: O enemy of God, and enemy of His Messenger, and enemy of the Commander of the Faithful! And Fatima set her two hands against the door, keeping me from opening it; and she held it fast, and it went hard with me. So I struck her two palms
