we shall burn it down upon you. She said: O 'Umar, do you not fear God, mighty and exalted, that you would enter upon me in my house and break in upon my dwelling?

But he refused to turn away. Then 'Umar called for the fire and kindled it at the door, and burned the door. Then 'Umar pushed it, and Fatima, peace be upon her, met him and cried out: O my father! O Messenger of God! So 'Umar raised the sword, and it was in its scabbard, and struck her side with it, and she screamed. Then he raised the whip and struck her arm with it, and she cried out: O my father! So 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon him, sprang up and seized 'Umar by the gathers of his garment, then shook him and threw him down and struck his nose and his neck, and was minded to kill him; then he remembered the words of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and what he had charged him with of patience and obedience.

So he said: “By Him who honoured Muhammad, may God bless him and his Family, with prophethood — O son of Suhak, were it not for a writ from God that has preceded, you would know that you shall not enter my house.” So 'Umar sent out a call for help, and the people came until they entered the house and overpowered him by numbers and cast a rope about his neck. And Fatima, peace be upon her, stood between them and him at the door of the house; and the accursed Qunfudh struck her with the whip, so that when she died she died with a mark upon her upper arm like an armlet from his blow — may God curse him. And he forced her against the doorpost of her house and pushed her, and broke her rib in her side, so that she cast the unborn child from her womb; and she did not cease to be confined to her bed until she died of that, the blessings of God be upon her, a martyr.

I say: and it is also related, from the book of Sulaym, that 'Umar b. al-Khattab in one of the years fined all his governors half their wealth, save Qunfudh. Sulaym said: I came to a circle in the mosque of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, in which there was none but a Hashimite, apart from Salman, Abu Dharr, al-Miqdad, Muhammad b. Abi Bakr, 'Umar b. Abi Salama, and Qays b. Sa'd b. 'Ubada. And al-'Abbas said to 'Ali, peace be upon him: What do you think prevented 'Umar from fining Qunfudh as he fined all his governors?

So 'Ali, peace be upon him, looked at those around him, and then his two eyes brimmed with tears, and then he said: He thanked him for a blow he struck Fatima, peace be upon her, with the whip — and she died, and upon her upper arm was its mark, as though it were an armlet. [2]
