as a support for the two of them. Then 'Umar entered and said to 'Ali, peace be upon him: Rise and pledge. And he hung back and held off; so he took him by his hand and said: Rise. And he refused to rise, so he lifted him and pushed him as he had pushed al-Zubayr. Then Khalid held them both, and 'Umar and those with him drove them along with a violent driving; and the people gathered, looking on, and the streets of Medina were filled with men.

And Fatima, peace be upon her, saw what 'Umar had done, and she cried out and wailed, and many women of the Hashimites and others gathered with her. And she came out to the door of her chamber and called out: O Abu Bakr, how swiftly have you fallen upon the household of the Messenger of God! By God, I shall not speak to him until I meet God. He said: And when 'Ali, peace be upon him, and al-Zubayr had pledged, and that outburst had subsided, Abu Bakr walked to her after that and interceded for 'Umar and made request of her, and she was reconciled to him.

Ibn Abi al-Hadid said: And the sound view, with me, is that she died holding a grievance against Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and that she charged that the two of them should not pray over her. And that, with our companions, is among the minor matters [14] forgiven them. It would have been more fitting for the two of them to honour her and to respect her station; but they feared division and were apprehensive of discord, so they did what was most conducive to good according to their own supposition; and they were in religion and in strength of certainty in a firm place. And the like of this, were it established to be an error, would not be a grave sin, but would be of the category of minor sins that do not call for disavowal nor make allegiance obligatory. End of the words of Ibn Abi al-Hadid — upon him be what he deserves and what he seeks. [15]
