O my father! Then he raised the whip and struck her arm with it, and she called out: O Messenger of God, how evilly did Abu Bakr and 'Umar succeed you!
So 'Ali, peace be upon him, sprang up and seized him by the gathers of his garment and threw him down and struck his nose and his neck, and was minded to kill him; then he remembered the words of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and what he had charged him with. So he said: By Him who honoured Muhammad, may God bless him and his Family, with prophethood — O son of Suhak, were it not for a writ from God that has preceded and a covenant that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, charged me with, you would have known that you shall not enter my house. So 'Umar sent out a call for help, and the people came until they entered the house; and 'Ali, peace be upon him, sprang for his sword. And Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearing that 'Ali, peace be upon him, would come out with his sword, for what he knew of his might and his severity. Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh: Go back; and if he comes out, well; and if not, then burst in upon him in his house; and if he resists, then set the fire upon their house. So the accursed Qunfudh went and burst in, he and his companions, without leave; and 'Ali, peace be upon him, sprang for his sword, but they reached it before him and overpowered him by numbers, for they were many. And he took hold of one of their swords, but they overpowered him by numbers and cast a rope about his neck. And Fatima, peace be upon her, stood between them and him at the door of the house; and the accursed Qunfudh struck her with the whip, so that when she died she died with a mark upon her upper arm like an armlet from his blow — may God curse him.
Then they went off with 'Ali, peace be upon him, dragging him along [6] until he brought him to Abu Bakr; and 'Umar stood over his head with the sword, and Khalid b. al-Walid, and Abu 'Ubayda b. al-Jarrah, and Salim the freedman of Abu Hudhayfa, and Mu'adh b. Jabal, and al-Mughira b. Shu'ba, and Usayd b. Hudayr, and Bashir b. Sa'd, and the rest of the people around Abu Bakr bearing arms. [7]
