Section (the kindling of the fire at the house of Fatima, peace be upon her). When 'Ali, peace be upon him, saw the people's abandoning of him and their leaving off to help him, and the gathering of their word with Abu Bakr and their exalting of him, he kept to his house. 'Umar said to Abu Bakr: What prevents you from sending to him that he may pledge? For there remains no one who has not pledged except him and these four. And Abu Bakr was the gentler of the two men and the more lenient and the more cunning and the deeper in his depths, while the other was the harsher of them and the rougher and the coarser. Abu Bakr said to him: Whom shall we send to him?
'Umar said: We shall send Qunfudh to him; for he is a harsh man, rough and coarse, one of the freed captives, of the Banu 'Adi b. Ka'b. So he sent him, and sent helpers with him; and he went and asked leave to enter upon 'Ali, peace be upon him, and he refused to give them leave. So Qunfudh's companions returned to Abu Bakr and 'Umar, who were sitting in the mosque with the people around them, and said: We were not given leave. 'Umar said: Go; and if you are given leave, well; and if not, then enter without leave.
So they went and asked leave, and Fatima, peace be upon her, said: I forbid you to enter my house without leave. So they returned, and the accursed Qunfudh stood firm; and they said: Fatima said such and such, so we shrank from entering her house without leave. 'Umar grew angry and said: What have we to do with women? Then he ordered people around him to gather firewood; and they carried the firewood, and 'Umar carried it with them, and they set it around the dwelling of 'Ali — and in it were 'Ali and Fatima and their two sons, peace be upon them. Then 'Umar called out, so that 'Ali and Fatima, peace be upon them, might hear:
By God, you shall come out, O 'Ali, and you shall pledge to the successor of the Messenger of God — or I shall set the fire upon you. So Fatima, peace be upon her, rose and said: O 'Umar, what have we to do with you?
He said: Open the door, or we shall burn your house down upon you. She said: O 'Umar, do you not fear God, that you enter upon me in my house? But he refused to turn away, and 'Umar called for the fire and kindled it at the door. Then he pushed it and entered; and Fatima, peace be upon her, met him and cried out: O my father! O Messenger of God! So 'Umar raised the sword, and it was in its scabbard, and struck her side with it, and she cried out:
