— It is hard upon me that you should see gloom in me, — so an enemy gloats or a loved one is grieved. [4] We return to the report of Sulaym. Then 'Ali, peace be upon him, went into his house, and 'Umar said to Abu Bakr: Send to 'Ali that he may pledge; for we are in nothing until he pledges, and if he pledges we are safe. So Abu Bakr sent to him: Answer the successor of the Messenger of God. And the messenger came to him and said that to him. 'Ali, peace be upon him, said to him: Glory be to God — how quickly you have lied against the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family! He knows, and those around him know, that God and His Messenger appointed no successor but me.

And the messenger went and told him what he had said. He said: Go and say to him: Answer the Commander of the Faithful, Abu Bakr. So he came to him and told him what he had said, and 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: Glory be to God! By God, the time has not been so long that it should be forgotten. By God, he knows that this name is fitting for none but me. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, commanded him — and he was the seventh of seven — and they greeted me as Commander of the Faithful; and he and his companion, of the seven, asked for confirmation and said: Is this from God and His Messenger? And the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, said to them: “Yes, truly, from God and His Messenger. He is the Commander of the Faithful, and the master of the Muslims, and the bearer of the banner of those with shining brows and limbs. God, mighty and exalted, shall seat him on the Day of Resurrection upon the Path, and he shall admit his friends to the Garden and his enemies to the Fire.” So the messenger went off and told him what he had said, peace be upon him; and they left him alone that day of theirs.

He said: Then when night came, 'Ali, peace be upon him, carried Fatima, peace be upon her, upon a donkey and took the hands of his two sons al-Hasan and al-Husayn, peace be upon them, and he left not one of the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, without coming to him in his dwelling; and he adjured them by God for his right and called them to help him. And not one man of them answered save the four of us: Salman, Abu Dharr, al-Miqdad and al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwam. [5] For we shaved our heads and gave him our help; and al-Zubayr was the most clear-sighted of us in helping him.

(5)أقول : لعل جملة هم سلمان وأبو ذر والمقداد والزبير بن العوام بيان من المصيف ( ره ) وإلا نسخة نسخة المصدر والبحار خالية عنها .I say: perhaps the phrase “they are Salman, Abu Dharr, al-Miqdad and al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwam” is an explanation by the compiler, may God have mercy on him; for otherwise the copy of the source and the Bihar are free of it.
