and taught me its interpretation. Then 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: lest you say tomorrow, “We were heedless of this.” Then 'Ali, peace be upon him, said to them: Do not say on the Day of Resurrection that I did not call you to help me, nor remind you of my right, nor call you to the Book of God from its opening to its sealing. 'Umar said to him: How little need we have, with what we have of the Qur'an, of that to which you call us. [2]

And in another report 'Umar said: Leave it and go about your business. So he said to them, peace be upon him: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, charged you and said: I leave among you the two weighty things, the Book of God and my kindred, the people of my house; and they shall not part until they return to me at the Pool. If you accept it, then accept me with it, that I may judge between you by what God has sent down in it; for I know better than you its interpretation, and what abrogates in it and what is abrogated, and its clear and its ambiguous, and its lawful and its forbidden. 'Umar said: Then take it away with you, so that it does not leave you and you do not leave it. We have no need of it, nor of you.

So he turned back, peace be upon him, to his house with the Qur'an, and sat, peace be upon him, upon his prayer-place and set the Qur'an in his lap and began to recite it, his two eyes pouring with tears. And his brother 'Aqil b. Abi Talib came in upon him and saw him weeping, and said: My brother, what ails you that you weep?

May God not make your eyes weep. He said, peace be upon him: My brother, my weeping, by God, is over the affair of Quraysh, and their galloping in error, and their circling about in discord, and their bolting in the wilderness. For they have agreed upon war against me as they agreed upon war against the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, before me. So may Quraysh be requited with the requitals [3] — for they have cut my kinship and stripped me of the rule of my cousin. Then he sobbed, weeping, and then said “we return to Him”, and said, quoting a verse: — If you ask me how I am, then I am — enduring against the vicissitudes of time, hard as iron.
