Section [on his presenting the Qur'an to the people, peace be upon him, and what they said in reply to him]. Sulaym b. Qays related from Salman the report of the Saqifa, and carried the account on until he said: When 'Ali, peace be upon him, saw their treachery and the little faith they kept with him, he kept to his house and turned to the Qur'an, composing and collecting it; and he did not go out of his house until he had collected it. It had been on sheets, and on palm-stalks, and on shoulder-blades, and on pieces of parchment. When he had collected all of it and written with his own hand its revelation and its interpretation, and what abrogates in it and what is abrogated, Abu Bakr sent to him: Come out and pledge. So 'Ali, peace be upon him, sent to him: I am occupied, and I have bound myself by an oath that I shall put on no cloak except for the prayer until I have composed the Qur'an and collected it. So they left him alone for some days; and he collected it in a single garment and sealed it. [1]
And it is related from another that he, peace be upon him, brought it to the grave of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and set it down and prayed two units and gave the greeting to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. Then he went out to the people, and they were gathered with Abu Bakr in the mosque of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. And 'Ali, peace be upon him, called out at the top of his voice: O people, I have not ceased, since the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, was taken, to be occupied — first with washing him, then with the Qur'an, until I collected all of it in this single garment. God did not send down upon His Messenger a single verse of it but that I have collected it; and there is not a verse of it but that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, recited it to me
