Clarification: "Addaba nabiyyahu 'ala mahabbatihi": God disciplined His Prophet in the way He loved and willed; in that case the prepositional phrase is a description of an omitted verbal noun. It is also possible that the word "'ala" is causal — that is, the Prophet's knowledge and understanding was what brought about his being disciplined with God's manners and his taking on the divine character, out of his love for God. And it is possible that it is a circumstantial clause from the subject of "addaba", that is, while the Prophet loved God and was upon divine love; or a circumstantial clause from the object of "addaba", that is, the Prophet's knowledge became the cause of his love for God, or of God's love for him. "Wa nahnu fima baynakum wa bayna Allah": that is, we are the intermediaries of knowledge and the remaining perfections between you and God, so do not ask any but us; or: we are your intercessors with God.

Al-Mahasin: Zayd al-Shahham related from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, concerning the noble verse "So let man look at his food." I said: What is man's food? He said: It is the knowledge that a man [must see] from whom he takes it.

Elucidation: This is one of the inner senses of the noble verse; and on this interpretation what is meant by "the water" is the sciences that flow from God, exalted, since they are the cause of the life of hearts and of their cultivation; and by "the earth", hearts and spirits — and their fruits are by reason of the fruits of those sciences.

Al-Ikhtisas: Al-Shahham related the like of the hadith above.

Al-Mahasin: Mas'ud al-Maysiri says: The Messiah, peace be upon him, said: Take the truth from the people of falsehood, but do not take falsehood from the people of truth; be critics of speech. For how many a misguidance is adorned with the verses of God's Book, as a counterfeit copper dirham is adorned with silver — to the eye the two are one, and only the expert can tell.

Clarification: Al-Fayruzabadi said: "mawwaha al-shay'" means he plated it with silver or gold while beneath it is copper or iron.

Al-Mahasin: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Two things are strange: a word of wisdom that comes out of the mouth of a foolish man — accept it; and a foolish word that issues from a wise man — so forgive him for it.

Elucidation: "Forgive it": that is, do not blame him for it, or cover it up and do not spread it abroad; for "ghafr" in origin means to cover.

What is meant by the water, the earth and the fruits is what is mentioned in the following verses: "That We pour down the water in abundance, then We split the earth in clefts and cause to grow in it grain, and grapes and green fodder, and olives and palms."
