then surely you have believed in the like of what we have believed in. God, exalted, says: "So if they believe in the like of what you believe in, then they are rightly guided."
"So if they believe in the like of what you believe in, then they are rightly guided." 'Ali b. al-Husayn, peace be upon them both, said: Speak to people of what they recognise, and do not lay upon them what is beyond their strength, lest you deceive them by means of us (or lest you make them bold against us).

Al-Ghayba of al-Nu'mani: 'Abd al-A'la b. A'yan says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: To carry our cause and submit to it is not merely to affirm it and accept it; rather, keeping it hidden and guarding it from those unworthy of it is itself a way of carrying our cause. Convey our greeting and God's mercy to them (the Shi'a) and say: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, sends you this message: May God have mercy on one who draws people's love and affection to me and to himself, and tells people what they recognise, and keeps hidden from them what they reject.

Al-Ghayba of al-Nu'mani: 'Amr b. Sa'd related from the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him: One day he said to Hudhayfa b. al-Yaman: O Hudhayfa, do not tell people what they do not know (do not understand), lest they rebel and fall into unbelief. Truly some branches of knowledge are hard and heavy: were the mountains to bear them, they would be unable to carry them. Truly the knowledge of us, the People of the House, will in the near future be denied and declared void by people; its narrators will be killed, and whoever recites it will be ill-treated — out of wrongdoing and envy of what God has given in preference to the progeny of the Successor, that is, the Successor of the Prophet, may God bless him and his family.

'Awali al-La'ali: The Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: Whoever conceals beneficial knowledge, God, exalted, will bridle his mouth on the Day of Resurrection with a bridle of fire.

It is related from the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, that he said: God did not take a pledge from the ignorant that they should learn, but He took a pledge from the scholars that they should teach.

It is related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: One whom people need so that he may teach them the matters of their religion, and who then asks them for a fee — it is fitting for God to cast him into the Fire of Hell.

'Awali al-La'ali: The Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: Do not teach wisdom to those unworthy of it, lest you wrong them; and do not withhold wisdom from those worthy of it, lest they be wronged.
