Al-Khisal: 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: Religion stands upon four: an eloquent scholar who acts upon his knowledge; a rich man who does not withhold his surplus wealth from the people of religion; a jurist who does not sell his Hereafter for this world; and an ignorant man who is not too proud to acquire knowledge. When the scholar conceals his knowledge, the rich man is miserly, the poor man sells his Hereafter for this world, and the ignorant man is too proud to seek knowledge, then the world goes backwards. In such a time let not the multitude of mosques and the number of those who come and go in them deceive you. It was said: O Commander of the Faithful, how is life in that age? He said: Outwardly keep company with them and inwardly differ from them. For every man is what he earns and is with the one he loves; and in that age await relief from God.

Al-Khisal: The sixth Imam, peace be upon him, said: Four things go to waste: love for the faithless; kindness to one who does not give thanks; teaching one who has no ear to hear; and a secret entrusted to one who keeps no secret.

Al-Fayruzabadi said: "hasufa", on the pattern of "karuma", means that his intellect became firm and sound, and the active participle is "hasif". "Ahsafa al-amr" means he made a matter firm. In some copies it reads "man la hifaza lahu".

Nawadir al-Rawandi: Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him, related from his forefathers that the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Whoever breaks a pledge of allegiance, or raises a banner of error, or conceals knowledge, or unjustly withholds another's property, or aids a wrongdoer in his wrongdoing knowing that he is a wrongdoer — such a one has indeed gone out of Islam.

Kanz al-Karajaki: 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: Whoever conceals knowledge where it ought to be declared is like one ignorant and unknowing.

'Ali, peace be upon him, said: The generous man is he who gives away his knowledge.

Munyat al-Murid: It is related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: I read in the book of 'Ali, peace be upon him, that God did not take a covenant from the ignorant to seek and acquire knowledge until He had first taken a covenant from the scholars to impart knowledge to the ignorant — for knowledge was before ignorance.
