When a scholar dies, a breach falls in Islam which nothing can close but a worthy successor of his. The angels seek forgiveness for the seeker of knowledge, and all the creatures of heaven and earth pray for him.

'Awali al-La'ali: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever honours a Muslim jurist — God shall be pleased with him on the Day of Resurrection when he meets Him; and whoever insults and abases such a jurist — God shall be wrathful with him when he meets Him on the Day of Resurrection.

It is related from the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — that he said: Whoever teaches a man one question has become the owner of him. It was said: May he sell him? He said: No; but he may command him and forbid him.

Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Ibn Ilyas said that Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, related from the Prophet: Two things are rare: first, words of wisdom from ignorant and dull-witted men — accept them; second, foolish words from a wise man — in that case forgive him, for every wise man has his slip and every fool his experience.

Al-Durra al-Bahira: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Have mercy on three: an honoured man of a people who has been abased; a rich man of a people who has become destitute; and a learned man whom the ignorant make sport of.

Nahj al-Balagha: 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: Do not speak sharply to the one who taught you speech, and do not show off your eloquence to the one who made your words sound.

"Al-dharaba" is sharpness of tongue, and "al-dharab" the corruption of the tongue; the point is the observance of the teacher's right. Therefore what Ibn Abi al-Hadid said — that by "the one who made him speak" and "the one who set him right" God is meant — is far-fetched.

Kanz al-Karajaki: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: Do not belittle a servant to whom God has given knowledge; for God did not belittle him when He gave him knowledge.

'Uddat al-Da'i: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: Among the teacher's rights upon the student are these: 1. that he not question him overmuch; 2. that if someone asks a question, he not answer before the teacher; 3. that if the teacher turns away, he not insist and press him; 4. that if the teacher is not disposed, he not cling to him; 5. that he not point at him with his hand; 6. that he not glance at him from the corner of his eye.
