so that man may taste the pleasure of what he eats and drinks. Then the Imam, peace be upon him, said: Tell me, what word is it whose beginning is associating partners with God and whose end is faith? Abu Hanifa said: I do not know. The Imam said: That word is "There is no god but God"; for if a person says only "There is no god", he has committed the associating of partners, whereas if he says "but God", this word bespeaks his faith. Then the Imam, peace be upon him, said: Woe to you! Is the killing of a person greater or fornication? Abu Hanifa said: The killing of a person. The Imam said: God, Mighty and Majestic, has accepted two witnesses in a case of killing, but in fornication there must be four witnesses. Then the Imam said: Is prayer greater or fasting? Abu Hanifa said: Prayer. The Imam said: Then why must the menstruating woman make up the fasts of the time of her menstruation, while the prayers of those days are not obligatory upon her? Now that the position of the rulings is such, how do you use analogy? Fear God and do not occupy yourself with analogy.

Amali al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Al-Husayn al-Ghada'iri related from al-Harith b. al-Tayhan that he said: Ibn Shubruma related to me: Abu Hanifa, who was my friend, and I came in upon Ja'far b. Muhammad, peace be upon them, and greeted him. I turned to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, and said: God has brought to you a man of Iraq possessed of jurisprudence, religious awareness and intellect. The Imam, peace be upon him, said to Abu Hanifa: Perhaps he is the one who measures God's religion by his own opinion? And then he turned to me and said: Is this al-Nu'man b. Thabit? Abu Hanifa said: Yes, may God make your state good. The Imam said: Fear God and do not use analogy in religion by your own opinion… And he continued the hadith as above, until the Imam said: The menstruating woman does not make up the prayer. O servant of God, fear God! When you and I are gathered tomorrow in God's presence, we shall say: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said. You and your companions will say: We heard, and it appeared so to us. And then God will do with us and with you whatever He wishes.

'Ilal al-Shara'i': My father and Muhammad b. al-Hasan — may God have mercy on them both — said: Sa'd b. 'Abdallah from Ahmad b. Abi 'Abdallah al-Barqi, from Abu Zuhayr b. Shabib b. Anas, from some of his companions, from Abu 'Abdallah, peace be upon him. The narrator says: I was in the presence of Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, when a youth of Kinda came and entered upon him and asked the Imam, peace be upon him, a question, and the Imam answered him. I recognised the youth and knew his question. Then I went to Kufa and came in upon Abu Hanifa. I saw the youth there asking him exactly the same question, and Abu Hanifa gave him an answer contrary to the answer the Imam had given. Abu Hanifa said: I am more learned than Ja'far b. Muhammad in what he knows. I have met many men and teachers and heard from their lips and profited greatly; but Ja'far b. Muhammad is a man of the scrolls — that is, he has taken his learning from books — and knowledge taken from the mouths of men is by far higher and better than learning taken from books! The narrator says: I said to myself, by God I shall go on the pilgrimage, even if I have not the means for it and must borrow. He says: I continued seeking and striving for the pilgrimage until the days of the pilgrimage came and I went. I came into the presence of Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, and repeated Abu Hanifa's words to him. The Imam, peace be upon him, laughed
