is the Helper. The axis of people is love and hatred. O people, one man hamstrung the she-camel of Salih, and all of them were afflicted with that punishment because of their being pleased with that act, by the proof of the verse: "So they called their companion, and he took [the sword] and hamstrung [her]. How then were My punishment and My warnings?" And He said: "So they hamstrung her, and their Lord brought down destruction upon them for their sin and levelled them with the ground, and He did not fear its consequence." Know that if anyone is asked about my killer and he supposes that he was a believer, that very person has indeed killed me. O people, whoever travels on the straight road reaches the water, and whoever deviates from it becomes bewildered. Then he came down from the pulpit.

And the like of this hadith has also been related by the way of Furat b. al-Ahnaf from the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, only that there he said: Do not be dismayed, in travelling the road of guidance, at the fewness of its people.

Al-Mahasin: Al-Halabi related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever keeps away from the community of the Muslims by the measure of a hand-span, the halter of faith is removed from his neck; and whoever breaks the pledge of allegiance to an Imam will come before God on the Day of Resurrection with his hands cut off.

"Khal'" in the hadith is used figuratively, as though the community of the Muslims had been likened to a garment that covers, and what is meant by it is parting and separation. It is possible that the original word in the hadith is "faraqa", as it is in the copy of al-Kafi, and that it was afterwards altered. In the hadiths of the Sunnis the word "faraqa" is used, as al-Jazari has recorded in al-Nihaya: "parting from the community" is abandoning the practice and following innovation. "Ribqa" is originally a firm rope that is tied around the necks or the legs of beasts, and it has been used of Islam figuratively, that is, the thing by which the Muslims hold themselves bound to the bounds and rulings of the law and its commands and prohibitions. And "ribqa" has the plural "ribq" in the speech of the Arabs, like "kisra" and "kisar"; and a rope that has a "ribqa" is called "ribq", whose plurals are "ribaq" and "arbaq". In the same lexicon he said: On this subject a hadith has come: Whoever learns the Qur'an and then forgets it will meet God on the Day of Resurrection while he is "ajdham", that is, with his hands cut off. "Ajdham" is from the root "jadhm", meaning cutting.

And of this is the hadith of 'Ali, peace be upon him, where he said: Whoever breaks his pledge of allegiance to the Imam will meet God while he is "ajdham", that is, he has no hand. Ibn Qutayba says: "Ajdham" here means one all of whose limbs have perished, and the hand is no more deserving of punishment than the rest of the limbs. The Arabs say: "rajul ajdham" and "majdhum", used when a man's whole body has perished through the disease of leprosy, which is a well-known illness.

Ibn al-Anbari, in refuting Ibn Qutayba, says: If punishment fell only upon the limbs with which one disobeys,
