اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِي الْكِتَابِ وَ بَيَّنْتُهُمَا فِي سِيرَتِي وَ سُنَّتِي وَ بَيْنَهُمَا شُبُهَاتٌ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَ بِدَعٌ بَعْدِی مَنْ تَرَكَهَا صَلَحَ أَمْرُ دِينِهِ وَ صَلَحَتْ لَهُ مُرُوءَتُهُ وَ عِرْضُهُ وَ مَنْ تَلَبَّسَ بِهَا وَ وَقَعَ فِيهَا وَ اتَّبَعَهَا كَانَ كَمَنْ رَعَى غَنَمَهُ قُرْبَ الْحِمَى وَ مَنْ رَعَى مَاشِيَتَهُ قُرْبَ الْحِمَى نَازَعَتْهُ نَفْسُهُ إِلَى أَنْ يَرْعَاهَا فِي الْحِمَى أَلَا وَ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ مَلِكٍ حِمًى أَلَا وَ إِنَّ حِمَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مَحَارِمُهُ فَتَوَقَّوْا حِمَى اللَّهِ وَ مَحَارِمَهُ الْخَبَرَ ١.

has stated in the Qur'an, and I have stated them in my conduct and my practice; and between the two are doubtful matters from Satan and innovations that will come after me. Whoever leaves them, the matter of his religion is set right and his manliness and honour are put in order; and whoever acts upon them, falls into them and follows them, is like one who brings his sheep close to a reserved pasture — whoever pastures his beasts near a reserved pasture becomes entangled in the temptation to pasture them in the reserve as well. Know that every king has a reserve, and God's reserve is what He has forbidden; so keep yourselves from God's reserve and from what He has forbidden.

باب 32 البدعة و السنة و الفريضة و الجماعة و الفرقة و فيه ذكر قلة أهل الحق و كثرة أهل الباطل

Chapter 32: Innovation, practice, obligation, the community, separation, and the fewness of the people of truth and the multitude of the people of falsehood

«1»- ما، الأمالي للشيخ الطوسي ابْنُ مَخْلَدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ النَّحْوِيِّ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ سَهْلٍ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عُلَيَّةَ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللّٰه عليه و آله عَمَلٌ قَلِيلٌ فِي سُنَّةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ عَمَلٍ كَثِيرٍ فِي بِدْعَةٍ.

Amali al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Al-Hasan says: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: A little deed in accordance with the practice is better than much deed in innovation.

«2»- ما، الأمالي للشيخ الطوسي ابْنُ مَخْلَدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْمَرْوَزِيِّ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ ثَقْبَةَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عُلَيَّةَ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللّٰه عليه و آله لَا يُقْبَلُ قَوْلٌ إِلَّا بِعَمَلٍ وَ لَا يُقْبَلُ قَوْلٌ وَ عَمَلٌ إِلَّا بِنِيَّةٍ وَ لَا يُقْبَلُ قَوْلٌ وَ عَمَلٌ وَ نِيَّةٌ إِلَّا بِإِصَابَةِ السُّنَّةِ.

Amali al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Aban related from Anas that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Speech without deed is not accepted, and speech and deed without intention are not accepted. And no speech, deed or intention is accepted unless it accords with the practice.

«3»- ما، الأمالي للشيخ الطوسي بِإِسْنَادِ الْمُجَاشِعِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ آبَائِهِ عَنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عليه السلام قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى اللّٰه عليه و آله يَقُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ بِسُنَّةٍ فَعَمَلٌ قَلِيلٌ فِي سُنَّةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ عَمَلٍ كَثِيرٍ فِي بِدْعَةٍ.

Amali al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Al-Mujashi'i related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he related from his fathers, from the Commander of the Faithful, that he said: I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, say: You must keep to the practice. A little deed in accordance with the practice is better than much deed in innovation.

بيان: لعل التفضيل هنا على سبيل المماشاة مع الخصم أي لو كان في البدعة خير فالقليل من السنة خير من كثير البدعة.

Perhaps the comparison here is by way of going along with the opponent, that is, if there were any good in innovation, then little of the practice would be better than much innovation.

«4»- ير، بصائر الدرجات أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ الْعَبْدِيِّ ٢ عَنْ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ عليه السلام قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللّٰه عليه و آله لَا قَوْلَ إِلَّا بِعَمَلٍ

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, related from his fathers, from 'Ali, peace be upon him, that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Speech without deed is not accepted
