Al-Sari b. 'Amir says: Al-Nu'man b. Bashir mounted the pulpit of Kufa, gave praise and thanks to God, and said: I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, say: Every domain has a protected border, and God's protected border is the lawful and the unlawful and the doubtful matters between the two. If a shepherd pastures his sheep near a reserved and forbidden place, the sheep will enter that place; so you too must leave the doubtful matters.

Al-Mahasin: From Abu Sa'id al-Zuhri, from Imam al-Baqir or Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon them, he relates that he said: Halting at a doubt is better than falling into destruction. If you leave one hadith and do not relate it, that is better than your relating countless hadiths.

'Awali al-La'ali: Shams al-Din Muhammad b. Makki related: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Leave what puts you in doubt for what is certain.

Whoever guards against doubtful matters has kept his religion clean.

Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: You should wait for certainty and take a wall for your religion.

Tahzib al-Ahkam: 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Hajjaj says: I asked Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him: Two men in a state of consecration have hunted game; is the expiation upon both of them together, or does each pay an expiation separately? He said: Upon both there is an expiation, and both of them have committed a sin. I said: Some of our companions asked me about this question and I did not know its ruling. He said: Whenever a question like this arises and you do not know its ruling, you must take precaution until you ask about it and know.

Tahzib al-Ahkam: 'Abdallah al-Waddah says: I wrote to al-Imam Musa al-Kazim, peace be upon him: The sun goes behind the mountain and the night comes on and the sun is hidden from us, while a redness rises from the top of the mountain; the muezzin who is with us gives the call to prayer. Shall I pray at this time, and if I am fasting shall I break my fast, or shall I wait until the redness goes? He wrote: In my view, wait until the redness disappears
