Chapter 31: Precaution in religion and halting at doubtful matters

الآيات؛

The verses

حمعسق: «وَ مَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِيهِ مِنْ شَيْ ءٍ فَحُكْمُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ»(10)

"And in whatever you differ, the judgement of it rests with God. Such is God, my Lord; in Him I trust and to Him I turn."

«1»- لي، الأمالي للصدوق الْوَرَّاقُ عَنْ سَعْدٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ أَخِيهِ عَلِيٍّ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ١ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ الْأَحْوَلِ عَنْ جَمِيلِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنِ الصَّادِقِ عَنْ آبَائِهِ عليه السلام قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللّٰه عليه و آله الْأُمُورُ ثَلَاثَةٌ أَمْرٌ تَبَيَّنَ لَكَ رُشْدُهُ فَاتَّبِعْهُ وَ أَمْرٌ تَبَيَّنَ لَكَ غَيُّهُ فَاجْتَنِبْهُ وَ أَمْرٌ اخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ فَرُدَّهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ الْخَبَرَ.

Amali al-Saduq: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, related from his fathers, from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, that he said: Matters are of three kinds: a matter whose right guidance is clear to you — follow it; a matter whose misguidance is clear to you — keep away from it; and a matter concerning which there is disagreement — refer it to God, Mighty and Majestic.

ل، الخصال أبی عن محمد العطار عن الحسين بن إسحاق التاجر عن علي بن مهزيار عن الحسن بن سعيد عن الحارث إلى آخر ما نقلنا يه، من لا يحضره الفقيه عن علي بن مهزيار مثله.

Al-Khisal: Al-Harith related the like of it. Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih: 'Ali b. Mahziyar related the like of it.

«2»- ل، الخصال مَاجِيلَوَيْهِ عَنْ عَمِّهِ عَنِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ أَبِي شُعَيْبٍ ٢ يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عليه السلام قَالَ: أَوْرَعُ النَّاسِ مَنْ وَقَفَ عِنْدَ الشُّبْهَةِ الْخَبَرَ.

Al-Khisal: Abu Shu'ayb says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The most abstinent of people is the one who halts in a case of doubt… to the end of the hadith.

«3»- ما، الأمالي للشيخ الطوسي فِي وَصِيَّةِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عليه السلام عِنْدَ وَفَاتِهِ أُوصِيكَ يَا بُنَيَّ بِالصَّلَاةِ عِنْدَ وَقْتِهَا وَ الزَّكَاةِ فِي أَهْلِهَا عِنْدَ مَحَلِّهَا وَ الصَّمْتِ عِنْدَ الشُّبْهَةِ الْخَبَرَ.

Amali al-Shaykh al-Tusi: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, counselled at the time of his martyrdom: O my sons! I charge you with the prayer at the beginning of its time, and with paying the alms in its proper place and to its proper people, and with silence in the face of doubt… to the end of the report.

«4»- ما، الأمالي للشيخ الطوسي الْمُفِيدُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْكَاتِبِ عَنْ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ عَنِ الرِّضَا عليه السلام أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عليه السلام قَالَ لِكُمَيْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ فِيمَا قَالَ يَا كُمَيْلُ أَخُوكَ دِينُكَ فَاحْتَطْ لِدِينِكَ بِمَا شِئْتَ.

Amali al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Dawud b. al-Qasim al-Ja'fari related from al-Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said to Kumayl b. Ziyad: O Kumayl, your religion is your brother; take as much precaution in your religion as you wish.

Majalis al-Mufid: Al-Katib related the like of it.

«5»- ما، الأمالي للشيخ الطوسي فِي وَصِيَّةِ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ عليه السلام وَ قَدْ أَثْبَتْنَاهَا فِي بَابِ اخْتِلَافِ الْأَخْبَارِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: وَ إِنِ اشْتَبَهَ الْأَمْرُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقِفُوا عِنْدَهُ وَ رُدُّوهُ إِلَيْنَا حَتَّى نَشْرَحَ لَكُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا شُرِحَ لَنَا.

Amali al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Among the counsels of Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, which we have brought in the chapter on the disagreement of hadiths, is that he said: Whenever a matter becomes doubtful to you, halt at the doubt and refer it back to us, so that we may explain to you what has been explained to us.
