Abu Basir said: Hisham b. al-Hakam related to me that he heard Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, say: Do not accept from us any hadith except the hadith that accords with the Qur'an and the Sunna, or find for the hadith you relate a witness from the earlier hadiths. Al-Mughira b. Sa'id — may God curse him — mixed into the books of my father's companions words that my father never said.

Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Fear God and do not accept from us a hadith that differs from the word of the Lord and the practice of our Prophet; for when we relate a hadith we say: God and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, have said. Yunus says: I came to Iraq and found there a large group of the companions of Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, and the companions of Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, and heard many hadiths from them and took their books, and I presented those hadiths to al-Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him. He rejected many hadiths in those books that were ascribed to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, and said to me: Abu al-Khattab and his companions ascribed lies; and likewise the companions of Abu al-Khattab have up to this day mixed hadiths with the hadiths of Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him. So do not accept what differs from the Qur'an. We relate hadith from God and the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, and we do not say "so-and-so said and so-and-so said", so that our words should become contradictory. Our last word is like our first word and our first word corroborates our last word. If at some time someone comes who relates to you a hadith contrary to it, send it back to him and say: you know better what you have brought — for every word of ours has a reality and has a light upon it. A word that has no reality and no light is the word of Satan.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Hisham b. al-Hakam says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, say: Al-Mughira b. Sa'd deliberately ascribed lies to my father. His companions were hidden among my father's companions. They would take the books of my father's companions and give them to al-Mughira. He would insert unbelief and heresy into them and ascribe it to my father, and then return the books and give them to my father's companions so that they might spread those books among the Shi'a. So every exaggerating hadith that is in the books of my father's companions is among the things that al-Mughira b. Sa'd inserted into their books.
