Allama Muhammad Baqir al-Majlisi 2 240

of this division is that it pertains to all the matters of religion, not that it is confined to one kind of them.

"Fa-man awrada wahidatan min hadhihi al-thalath" — that is, the three sections included in the last section; and he singled them out only because the first section is not a subject of dispute, contention or argument. And the Imam, peace be upon him, interpreted the conclusive proof as what reaches everyone and by which the argument is complete against all people. "Fa-ajazahu al-Rashid" means that Harun al-Rashid gave a gift to al-Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him.

This much that we have said is what comes to mind and has been set down in haste in resolving this hadith, which contains obscurity and brevity; and God knows better the reality of the case.

I found this report after Tuhaf al-'Uqul in the book al-Ikhtisas, and in al-Ikhtisas it is clearer than the former; and I have brought it:

Al-Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him, says that Harun al-Rashid said to me: I would like you to write me a summary statement containing roots and branches, whose explanation is intelligible and clear, and which you have heard from Imam al-Sadiq and Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon them. He says: In answer to Harun I wrote: In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. Religions comprise two matters and questions: a matter in which there is no disagreement and upon which the community, on account of a necessity to which they are compelled, has consensus; and the hadiths upon which they are agreed and which resolve every ambiguity, and from which every event and every new thing can be derived; and another matter and thing in which doubt, hesitation and denial are possible… to the end of the hadith.

I say: The complete hadith will come in the chapters of his history.
