Chapter 28: The reports of the Messenger, may God bless him and his family, which the Sunnis relate; that what is sound of these is with the Imams, peace be upon them; the prohibition of turning to the reports of the opponents; and in it the mention of the liars
Basa'ir al-Darajat: Muhammad b. Muslim says: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, saying: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, gave people much knowledge; but we, the People of the House, are the fortresses of knowledge, the gates of wisdom, and the light of people's affairs.
Elucidation: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, gave people many sciences, but the standard of those sciences is with us, the People of the House; the distinguishing of what is true from what is forged is with them, and the explanation of what the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said is with the People of the House, peace be upon them; and people gain no benefit from the hadiths of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, save by referring to them.
Basa'ir al-Darajat: Hisham b. Salim says: I asked Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: May I be your ransom! Is anything of the sound hadiths of the Prophet to be found among the Sunnis? He said: Yes, the Prophet gave people much knowledge; but the firm fortress of knowledge and the settling of people's questions is with us.
Basa'ir al-Darajat: Muhammad b. Muslim says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, gave people much knowledge; and we, the People of the House, are the firm rope, the fixed peg, the firm building, and the light of people's affairs.
Basa'ir al-Darajat: Ibn Muskan related the like of it. "Al-'urwa" is the handle of a rope or the like that is held fast. "Al-akhiyya" is read with and without doubling, and means a stake in the middle of a wall, or a stake with a rope whose two ends are driven into the ground and whose middle shows like a ring to which animals are tethered. "Akhiyya" has the plurals "akhaya" and "ukhiy" — this is stated by al-Fayruzabadi. That is, we, the People of the House, are the firm building of the matter of religion, from whom the knowledge of religion is not separated.
