that he proclaim the truth in every case; but once the way has been made clear to people and the proof completed against them, it is not incumbent upon the Imam to produce a miracle and proclaim the truth in every state; rather he proclaims it at one time and refrains at another, [according to] whatever he is commanded. "Kal-ra'i": that is, we are like the shepherd — when we wish to gather people and are commanded to do so, we gather them with the least effort. "Fa-idha kanat al-wasiyya wa al-kibar fa-la rayb": that is, after my father made his bequest to me, while I was the eldest of my father's children, no doubt remains concerning my imamate. "Wa man jalasa majalis al-hukm" — perhaps this is dissimulation on his part, peace be upon him — that is, the caliph is entitled to the caliphate; or what is meant is that the caliph has priority in judging among people. And it is possible that what is meant by sitting in the seats of judgement is expounding the rulings to people — that is, one who expounds the rulings to people without error is the one entitled to judgement and to the imamate; so the aim is to establish a further proof of his imamate.

Chapter 26: That the hadith of the Imams, peace be upon them, is hard and hard to bear; that their words have many aspects; the merit of reflecting upon their reports, peace be upon them, and of submitting to them; and the prohibition of rejecting their reports

The verses

al-Nisa': "But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in what is in dispute among them, and then find within themselves no discomfort [or doubt] at what you have decided, and submit in full submission."

Yunus: "Rather, they belied what they could not encompass in knowledge, and whose interpretation had not yet come to them. Thus did those before them deny [their prophets]. So see what was the end of the wrongdoers."

al-Kahf: "He said: You will never be able to have patience with me. And how can you have patience with what you do not encompass in knowledge?"

al-Nur: "The saying of the believers, when they are called to God and His Messenger that he may judge between them, is only that they say: We hear and we obey. It is they who are the successful."

"And when the believers saw the parties of the enemy they said: This is what God and His Messenger promised us, and God and His Messenger spoke truly — and it increased them only in faith and submission." "And it is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when God and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have any choice in their affair; and whoever disobeys God and His Messenger has surely fallen into manifest error."
