"And We gave them clear proofs in the matter [of religion], and they did not differ save after knowledge had come to them, out of envy and rivalry among themselves. Truly your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that in which they used to differ."
Hadith 1. Nahj al-Balagha: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him: O people! Profit from what God has set forth, and take admonition from God's admonitions, and accept His counsels; for God, by clear proofs, has closed the way of excuse to you and completed the proof against you. He has set forth the deeds He loves and has made known what He dislikes, so that you may follow the good and keep away from the evil. Truly the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, used always to say: "Paradise is surrounded by hardships and the Fire of Hell is surrounded by desires and appetites." Know that there is nothing of obedience to God but it is performed with some reluctance, and nothing of disobedience to God but it is done with inclination and desire. So may God's mercy be upon one who overcomes his appetites and subdues his lower desire; for the hard thing is to restrain the soul from appetite, which constantly craves disobedience and sin. Servants of God! Know that a man of faith does not pass from night to day nor from day to night but that he holds his own soul suspect; he continually reproaches his soul and counts it sinful. So be in this world like your righteous predecessors who passed on before you and, like travellers, struck their tents and went on their way.
Amali of al-Saduq: Ibn Abi 'Umayr related from one who heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying often:
The mark of the road is clear and plain to one who seeks it
yet I see hearts heedless and blind towards this road. I have marvelled at one who perishes while his way of deliverance was present; and at the same time I marvel at one who is delivered.
Elucidation: The Imam's wonder, peace be upon him, at those who perish is because of the many causes of guidance and the plainness of the proof; and the wonder at those who are delivered is because of their fewness and the many who perish — and everything rare is a cause for wonder.

Qabas al-Misbah: Mas'ada b. Ziyad says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, when he was asked about the noble verse "Say: To God belongs the conclusive proof", say: When the Day of Resurrection comes, God says to His servant: Were you learned? If he says yes, He says: Why did you not act upon your knowledge? If he says: I was ignorant, He says: Why did you not acquire knowledge? This, then, is God's conclusive proof.
