treachery, deceit and evil. "'Alayhinna" stands in the position of a circumstantial clause, its implied sense being "la yaghillu ka'inan 'alayhinna qalbu mu'min". Here ends al-Jazari's discussion in al-Nihaya.
Sincerity in deeds is that a man make his deed free of manifest polytheism — the worship of idols and of every object of worship besides God, and the following of false religions — and likewise of hidden polytheism, which is ostentation in all its kinds and sorts, and self-admiration.
Sincere counsel to the leaders of the Muslims is following them and giving wealth and life in their support. "Wa al-luzumu li-jama'atihim": what is meant is the company of the people of truth even if they be few, as many reports state. "Fa-inna da'watahum muhitatun min wara'ihim": the intended meaning becomes that the Prophet's prayer, may God bless him and his family, for the Muslim community encompasses all Muslims, if the annexation of "da'wa" is to the object; and it may be of the kind annexed to the subject, in which case the intended meaning becomes: the Muslims' prayer for one another encompasses all Muslims. On this reading the hadith conveys an encouragement to keep with the Muslims and not to separate from them. It is also possible that what is meant by "da'wa" is the Prophet's call to them, may God bless him and his family, to the true religion. "Man" is a relative pronoun — that is, the Prophet's call was not confined to his contemporaries but also includes those who come after them. Al-Jazari says: "fa-inna da'watahum tuhitu min wara'ihim" — that is, the Prophet's call for them, may God bless him and his family, encompasses, suffices and guards them. "Tatakafa'u dima'uhum": that is, in case of treachery each of the Muslims is subject to retaliation for another Muslim; and the noble man is not spared, because of his nobility, in the case of one of lower rank when he is killed or wounded. The Prophet's words, may God bless him and his family, "wa hum yadun 'ala man siwahum": al-Jazari says: It has come in this form, that the bloods of the Muslims are equal among them and that they are a single hand against outsiders — that is, the Muslims are united and of one hand against their enemies, and there is no abasement among them; rather they help one another against all religions and nations, as though they were a single hand and their affair a single affair. "Yas'a bi-dhimmatihim adnahum": that is, in the matter of the Muslims' protection, "striving" in this hadith alludes to declaring and contracting a covenant of protection — that is, if a single one of the lowliest Muslims contracts protection with an unbeliever on behalf of all the Muslims, his contract is to be honoured. Al-Jazari says: of this kind is the hadith "yas'a bi-dhimmatihim adnahum" — that is, when a single person grants safety to an enemy force, this ruling is binding upon all the Muslims and they cannot annul it or break his covenant.
