they would not have quarrelled or contended, nor burdened anyone with assenting to what is beyond his capacity, nor pressed people to understand what they are not obliged to understand and what their knowledge does not encompass; they would have confessed their incapacity and not cast themselves into places of destruction.

Al-Mahasin: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying: Make your religion for God and do not make it for people. If religious practice is for God, then it is for God and is accepted; and when we do it for display to people, it is not raised up to God. Do not quarrel with people over your religion, for enmity with people sickens the heart. God said to His Prophet: "Truly you do not guide whom you love, but God guides whom He wills." And He said: "And had your Lord willed, all who are on the earth would have believed, every one of them. Would you then compel people until they become believers?" Leave people alone, for people have taken their religion from people, while you have taken your religion from the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, and from 'Ali, peace be upon him — and these two are not equal. I heard my father saying: When God has decreed for His servant that he enter this cause (the walaya), he enters it faster than a bird enters its nest.

Al-Mahasin: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, related that my father used to say: What have you to do with calling people, summoning them to our walaya? Truly no one enters this cause save one for whom God has written it.

Al-Mahasin: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: O Thabit (Abu Hamza al-Thumali), what have you to do with people?

Leave them be.

Al-Mahasin: Ayyub b. al-Hurr says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying: A man came to my father and said: I am a contentious man and I quarrel with anyone who wishes to enter Shi'ism until he enters it. My father said to him: Do not quarrel with anyone, for God, exalted, when

He is Thabit b. Sa'id, according to what may be gathered from the first hadith of the chapter on guidance in al-Kafi. The hadith is as follows: A number of our companions, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. 'Isa, from Muhammad b. Isma'il al-Sarraj, from Ibn Muskan, from Thabit b. Sa'id, who said: Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, said: O Thabit, what have you to do with people? Hold back from people and call no one to your cause. By God, were the people of the heavens and the people of the earths to gather to guide a servant whose misguidance God wills, they could not; and were they to gather to lead astray a servant whose guidance God wills, they could not. Hold back from people, and let none say: my uncle, my brother, my cousin, my neighbour — for when God wills good for a servant He purifies his spirit, so that he hears no good thing but he recognises it, and no evil thing but he rejects it; then God casts into his heart a word by which He sets his affair in order.
