Amali of al-Saduq: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Beware of quarrelling in religion, for it turns the heart away from the remembrance of God and gives rise to hypocrisy and rancour; and in disputation it forces one into lying and false speech, and he comes to think that this is permissible.

Clarification: "Al-daga'in" is the plural of "daghina", meaning rancour, enmity and hatred. "Tastajir" in some copies reads "tastajiz" — that is, in disputation it forces a man into lying and false speech, and he thinks to himself that this is permissible out of necessity. And in some copies it reads "yastajir" — that is, he seeks refuge with God, and to escape being overcome by his opponent he resorts to falsehood.

Amali of al-Saduq: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever quarrels with men loses his manliness… to the end of the hadith.

Al-Khisal: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: I am surety and guarantor for a house in the meadow of Paradise, a house in the midst of Paradise and a house in the uppermost part of Paradise: for one who abandons disputation even though the truth be on his side; for one who does not lie even in jest; and for one who makes his character good.

Elucidation: "Al-za'im" means guarantor and surety. "Rabad al-janna" means the lower part of Paradise, near its gate and its wall. In al-Nihaya Ibn al-Athir says: "ana za'imun bi-baytin fi rabad al-janna" means I am surety for a house around and outside Paradise, by way of likening it to the buildings around cities and below fortresses. "Al-hazl" means jest, the opposite of seriousness.

Al-Khisal: Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Who will undertake four qualities for me, that I may undertake four houses in Paradise for him? Whoever spends

and does not fear poverty; and deals justly with people from his own side; and makes the greeting of peace manifest in the world; and abandons disputation even though the truth be on his side. Al-Mahasin: The like of that hadith has come.

Al-Khisal: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Four things kill the heart: sin upon sin; much keeping company with women; disputing with a fool who talks on and on and does not accept the truth;
