desert trees: the wood of "markh" is rubbed against green "'afar", and from the two of them water drips drop by drop, and then fire is kindled. What appears from the explanation of the Imams, peace be upon them, is that from that tree the fire latent within it becomes manifest, not that fire is kindled by the rubbing of the two pieces of wood — as the philosophers say, and this view is widespread among them. The full treatment of this will come in the book of the Heaven and the World. "Qadar" means capacity, and "qadr" means strength and power; these two meanings are given by al-Fayruzabadi.

Amali of al-Saduq: The most abstinent of people is one who abandons wrangling even though the truth be on his side.

Elucidation: "Al-mira'" means disputation and wrangling. What appears from the reports is that the blameworthy kind is only that wrangling whose aim is victory over the other party, displaying one's own excellence, boasting, bigotry, or promoting falsehood. But what serves to make the truth manifest, to remove falsehood, to repel uncertainty from religion and to guide the astray — that is among the greatest pillars of religion. Yet distinguishing the two is extremely difficult, and often at the outset the one is mistaken for the other; and in this matter the human soul has hidden ambiguities from which there is no escape save by the grace of the Lord.

Amali of al-Saduq: Muhammad b. Muslim said: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, was asked about wine. He said that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: The first things my Lord, mighty and exalted, forbade me were the worship of idols, the drinking of wine, and wrangling and enmity with men.

Elucidation: Al-Jazari says: "nuhitu 'an mulahat al-rijal" means I was forbidden wrangling with people and enmity towards them. You say "lahaytuhu mulahatan wa liha'an" when you quarrel and dispute with someone.

Amali of al-Saduq: Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: O Ziyad! Beware of entering into contention, for it brings doubt, voids the reward of a deed, and destroys the one who engages in it. And often a man says a word for which he is not forgiven.

Elucidation: What is meant by "contention" — speaking about which is forbidden in this hadith — may be reflecting upon the Essence of God, exalted, or upon the inner reality of His attributes, or upon the question of decree and destiny, compulsion and free choice, and the like, as the end of the report indicates.
